short description
The association rents an apartment near the Gemelli hospital which is absolutely inadequate to house the number of families in need of assistance during their stay in Rome.
For this reason, an old country house belonging to the City of Rome was assigned to the association in 2004 by the Department of Social Affairs (Assessorato alle Politiche Sociali).
The building has since been restored with the money of the Rome Capital Fund, which will be used as a hostel where family members of the patients can stay for the duration of the child’s treatment. It is designed to have 11 small apartments plus services.
The hostel is now almost complete. However, one essential task must still be attended to and completed before it can become fully operational and of use to families of the children in care – the space must be furnished. However, funding to pay for this last step is currently inadequate and must be found as soon as possible in order to complete this project and make the space available for use.
The new hostel shall offer additional lodging space with a complete service to the people accompanying the hospitalized children.
After the restoration, the hostel will have 11 small apartments, which need to be provided with basic furniture (similar to a hotel) with a kitchenette and rest room.
A special space for general services like laundry and a self-service coffee shop shall also be provided.
Furniture for a small reception and a meeting room for socialization and entertainment (tv corner) are also included in the project.
Family members or close relatives/mentors will eventually be able to stay in a comfortable accommodation without charge, which will allow them to be able to remain with and comfort the child during a crucial time of need.
Children treated at the day hospital would have the opportunity to join their family and sleep in the hostel, thus alleviating part of the burden of their situation.
The families living in the hostel have more opportunity to socialize and share their problems with the others. At the same time, the association has the chance to monitor the real needs of the hosted families and offer economic/psychological assistance.
Transportation between hospital and hostel will be provided by a minibus shuttle owned by the association.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE APPLICANT :
The Association Ali Di Scorta was founded in 1999 by a group of parents of children affected by cancer (brain tumours and leukaemia), together with some volunteers and in cooperation with the staff of the oncology and pediatric departments of the Agostino Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy.
The main tasks of the association are:
To provide economical, psychological and logistical assistance to the parents and families of the hospitalized children during the course of their treatment, which is often long and intensive. (Most of the patients are not residents of Rome and come from the south of Italy. Patients also come from Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Many of these families live in severe economic hardship.)
To organize fundraising initiatives to support all the association’s activities.
Provide an adequate shelter for the family members assisting the young patients during their hospitalization.

Remarks
The furnishing of the hostel financed by the foundation would allow the association to run the hostel as expected, to be able to host 11 family groups.
